Policing for Revenue

You have likely heard of how Philando Castile was fatally shot in Falcon Heights, MN. Some would argue that this was not his first interaction with the police. It turns out they were right. He had been pulled over 52 times and issued 86 citations totaling  $6,588 in fines and fees. That is after half of the citations were thrown out of court. This sort of policing is similar to the way Randall would scare the same girl over and over again in Monsters Inc.

As John Oliver points out, the methods used to enforce minor violations may end up costing more than the tickets actually bring in and force people into rackets that make predatory lending seem pale in comparison. The purpose of government should not be destroying people’s lives.
